Having optical out in a laptop means having a conversion to SPDIF somewhere inside. The fact it's a laptop means it's gonna be some pretty jammed mini sound card. I'm not familiar with Mac's innards, so I can't say, but I'd be somewhat cautious with regards to quality of SPDIF stream generated there...
