Don't know if this is a corollary to what you ask but I think an excellent starting point for a (mainly) symphonic collection is to acquire the recently remastered RCA Living Presence SACD/CD's such as here: http://www.elusivedisc.com/prodinfo.asp?number=RCASASET1234 This link is for the first four sets but there are also sets 5 &6.
