I beg to differ. There can be no audio quality improvement in adding 
anything to the audio chain.

And there have been many threads on direct connection of a SqueezeBox to 
an amp. With proper gain matching, there is no safety issue. You may 
need attenuators, Sean Adams pointed out some high quality and 
reasonably priced models.

Audiophile passive preamps tend to be very pricey for what the do, which 
is nearly nothing by switching.

To be direct. You do not _need_ a preamp when using a SqueezeBox or 
Transporter.
