Volts may not have a sound, but you want mostly DC volts with little ripple and good regulation. The transporter has three internal jumpers to set the output level, which could be thought of as having an analog volume control with three settings, e.g. 9,12,and 3 O'clock. Once the gains are somewhat matched it can then be more safely used as an audiophile volume control (without going too low on the scale). Using resistors as voltage dividers or jumpers in Transporter is less convenient that stepped attenuators, but unless I'm mistaken proves that the digital volume control is intended for audiophile use. I personally wouldn't feel comfortable not being able to use 100 on the Sb for critical listening, if for example that was 'loud loud' with my fixed attenuator setup and I needed to be a quiet audiophile.
