So do 100k speaker really sound better than well chosen $4k ones? And once you have the right speakers, where do you invest in, to make additional small differences? I will agree it is silly to overinvest when real weak links exist in a chain, but once the bottlenecks are eliminated... why should optimization end? Where's the fun in that?
