Squeezebox converts 16 bit to 24 bit (still 44.1kHz though), so that it can perform digital volume control without degrading the data, but doesn't sound any more calm or smooth to me. Try upscaling a 640x480 file to 1024x768 in Gimp (or Photo$hop).
