I have a DVD drive and a standard CD reader. DVD is 16x, CD reader is 52x. The standard cheapo CD reader is so much faster than the DVD. Problem nowadays is that DVD 'do everything' drives are so affordable, they are the default option in 'one drive' computers. I have space for two drives & bought the el-cheapo 52x standard CD reader specifically because the DVD was so slow in the ripping process. So maybe it's the hardware, not necessarily the software. I use EAC & Flac (latest version).
