I don't get this, personally. I don't think being an audiophile means
you don't care about how much something costs. To me, it means you
care about getting really good quality sound. True, one corollary is
that you're willing to spend a lot more money than the average person
to get it. But that doesn't mean price is irrelevant.

The vast majority of us still have budget constraints. We can spend,
at most, $X on our rig, even if $X is a comparatively large number. So
why would value be irrelevant?

Suppose Acme speakers cost $10,000, and have a sound quality level of
9/10. Then Newco comes out with speakers having exact same sound
quality -- 9/10 -- but costing only $5,000.

Which are you going to buy? (Assume build quality, looks, and all
other factors are equal.) Newco, right?

Now suppose the Newco speakers have a sound quality of 8.999/10 -- a
very slight, practically unnoticeable decrease. I take it your point
is that the "true audiophile" will spend the full $10k for the Acme
speakers just to get that marginal increase in sound quality.

But there are other parts to your rig. Almost invariably, you can get
a bigger increase in sound quality if you take the extra $5,000 and
spend it on some other component. Maybe by spending that cash on a new
set of monoblocks, you can raise your overall sound quality from 9/10 to
9.5/10, even with the Newco speakers.

Wouldn't even the pickiest audiophile want to do just that -- unless
they literally had no budget constraint, and could therefore do both?

So when someone says, -"The improved SQ is not worth the extra cash,"-
might they really mean, -"I can get a greater improvement in SQ by
spending the extra cash on something else"-?
