There is an over voltage protection circuit at the PSU input (actually, I'm talking about a SB2). As far as I remember this OVP triggered around 6.2V (I spent some time playing around with power supply). No destructive, but 6.33V (no load?) is hardly usable. On the other hand, I tested a pack of four NiMh AA batteries (nominal voltage: 4.8V) and it worked (for a couple of hours) down to about 4.65V. However, I feel (difficult to _measure_) that a too low PSU voltage is no good for audio performance. All in all, my advice: try to get a refund for your PSU, and, if you want to go linear, order a one with the correct voltage.
