I've never noticed this with lossless compression, but for mp3s, ** YES
**.  That's the thing I notice most with mp3s - poor encoding of highs. 
I find it most noticeable with things like cymbals and snare drums. 
Instead of having a discernable 'splash' and decay, they often sound
one-dimensional and clipped, a bit like a small explosion without
texture.
