I could be incorrect, but I believe that 0 VU represents -20 dBFS or 20
dB below full scale. A digital sample of sixteen 1s would be full
scale. I think 20 dB below that is ... oh dear ... 0000001010001111. VU
is an average reading, so if a recording is holding at 0 VU, then it's
RMS power is holding at about 20 dB below full scale? I think the
Slimserver VU meter is reasonably accurate.

Of course, I could be mistaken in all this:)

If the VU meters are pegged, then there is a good chance the file is
clipping against full scale, and the DAC is attempting to put out DC.
