if you like that solution -
you should consider fanless mini-itx barebone for slimserver.
its small, silent, low power (low temperature).

also you can use it with external usb drives, just check it have USB
2.0

There comes inexpensive example

in one of UK inet shops it would cost me around $1000

PS. storage central can be noisy, so keep away from living room.
