As no-one has given any advice, I thought I'd share what I've discovered so far.
It is quite hard to find decent & small active speakers with automatic power on/off The ones I found so far are Canton Plus Media 3 £190 for a pair http://www.canton.de/de-produktdetail-plus-plusmedia3.htm KRK V4 series 2 £332 for a pair http://www.krksys.com/index2.php?cat=products&page=v4_series2 Slightly bigger are the Tannoy Reveal 5A £198 As I can only find the Cantons on the web in one place in the UK, so no place to try them out, so far it's down to the KRKs unless I settle for the slightly bigger Tannoys. I'll have to find some time to go and test drive them somewhere. It would be nice to have a cheaper option for elsewhere such as the kitchen, but I haven't managed to find any with auto power on/off, so may have to forgo that requirement.
