I think you are on the right track - The "pure direct" appears to be analog w/out re-routing thru the recievers DAC and DSP. If it's just the incoming signal pre-amped to the amp section, that's what you want.
The digital input will clearly use the receivers DAC and its DSP. That can be good, too, for applying the DSP's to the output. My guess is that you will prefer one of these two outputs to the SB3's analog outputs run into an AV receiver's analog input that then runs it thru the receivers DAC and DSP again.
