Although I've never used interconnects that short, I too get the
impression that balanced usually seems better than unbalanced. At the
risk of using audiophool goggledigook, I get the sense there's an
"authority" to the sound that's lacking in unbalanced.

I'm skeptical about this being the reason. While balanced lines are
sometimes impedance-matched in pro studio applications, in a domestic
setting it's nearly always a case of low output impedance into high
input impedance - just the same as unbalanced. And for short runs, it
seems unlikely that common mode noise rejection is a significant
factor. So I'm left with the hypothesis that perhaps the advantage of
balanced might be something to do with grounding. But the more I think
about it, the less I feel able to suggest a mechanism.
