Hypnotoad, This forum isn't "actively" unpleasant. You must take it (and all other internet forums/mailing lists) with a grain of salt. They are simply the result of people expressing their opinions with a good degree of anonymity from the relative security of their own homes. I suspect that if most of the folks here met in person it would be more akin to a "tea party".
