On the sb3 you can remove it, but you lose the ability to play 48kHz streams like internet radio, and possibly (?) the ability to downsample 96kHz stuff to 48kHz as well. Since transporter handles 96kHz natively though, I'd guess it may be needed for that, and would avoid removing it. Of course, I could be wrong.
