FLAC is a widely used lossless compression codec, preferred by many because of its proven solidity, its independence from the likes of MS and Apple, and the fact that a FLAC decoder is built right into the SB3 and Transporter firmware. This allows you to stream your data as FLAC, thus needing only about 50% of the network bandwidth of uncompressed music, and restore to original music file at the player end.
As for the decision on a single compromise between quality and space, only you can really say where that sits. If you move away from using lossless you will compromise the quality via the SB but many people around here use medium rate mp3 for all their music and are fine with that. You could do a test by encoding a favourite track in Apple Lossless format and also in one or two compressed versions and then play them back in turn via the SB and see if the difference is a) discernable to you, and b) matters. davep -- davep ------------------------------------------------------------------------ davep's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=61 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36780 _______________________________________________ audiophiles mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
