Certain motherboards like "double sided" RAM, or RAM only in certain
module combinations (i.e. 256 MB composed of 8 X 32 MB chips).  Given
the proprietary nature of HP's motherboards, this is probably the case
- they want you buying RAM from them.  I believe Crucial has an
extensive online system that chooses memory specifically for the
motherboard.

In regards to the processor, I've seen XP running on a 333 MHz Celeron
laptop, albeit slowly.
