Amen to that. Unless your LPs are pristine to start with, cleaning them
properly is probably more important than any other stage in the process
(assuming the turntable is half decent and properly aligned). I've
experimented with a lot of cleaning procedures, and IMHO the only one
that really works properly is a vacuum based one (eg. Keith Monks,
Nitty Gritty, VPI, Moth). I use a Moth RCM mkII. The Keith Monks is
probably the best of the bunch, but it's not really an option for
domestic use.

Amplification is the application of a linear gain to the file.
Normalisation is simply the same, but with a pre-scan phase which
determines the existing peak level and computes the necessary
amplification required to achieve a desired peak level.

My music library is a mixture of CD rips and LP transfers, and
ReplayGain is certainly useful to equalise the perceived loudness. Note
that LPs have more dynamic range than modern rock/pop CDs*, so expect
lower ReplayGain values. Beware of positive ReplayGain values - the
Squeezebox firmware doesn't take notice of the clipping this can
generate.

* When I say LPs have more dynamic range, I'm not saying vinyl is
better than CD - just that the amount of compression used on modern CD
mastering is far greater than you get on LPs.
