Well, there's the rub. If the original question involves vague, highly
debated and contentious issues that have no widely agreed-upon answers,
then you're going to get vague, highly debated and contentious answers
with little agreement. Power cords are a wonderful example of a
question that is certain to get such an answer. As an added bonus,
you're also guaranteed to get a certain number of wisecrack responses
for extra entertainment.

There are a couple of ways to avoid this situation.

One is to frequent a forum where the prevailing mentality is in line
with your predilections. I don't think the Squeezebox crowd is
uniformly in the power cord camp. 

Another way is to visit only moderated forums where nothing gets posted
until is passes muster for being on-subject. That's not the case here,
either. 

I don't know how realistic it is to expect anything to change without
implementing the restrictions noted above. That's not to say that you
won't find some useful advice among the debris, but the burden is on
you to take what is meaningful to you and leave the rest. Good luck
