Phil hit the nail on the head - there is no consensus.

In general I would suggest getting good budget versions of each, and
trying it.  If you can't tell the difference, then your DAC is
presumably rejecting jitter or whatever sufficiently well that spending
more will be pointless.  If you can tell the difference, and have a
preference, then you know where to spend your money.

It seems reasonable to posit that the differences are very small - more
obvious differences should give rise to less debate.  Actually, no, this
is the audiophile forum ;)

Sorry I don't have any good recs for decent toslink (optical) vendors,
but they are available very cheaply.  Of course, you can also get into
the glass vs plastic debate :)
