Actually it does make sense to use flac (or any other loseless compression format). That is the only way you would be able to obtain the same quality as you started out with (with the DRM'ed) file. Generally compressing compressed files is a bad idea. And you can not "cheat" by decompressing to wav, which is basically what the process does in this respect. So I would go for flac since otherwise you loose quality.
