It depends on the sex of the xlr. Chances are good that if it fits in an XLR output it is correct. However, it should be checked with an ohmmeter to make sure that one side is not connected. BTW it is unlikely that shorting one of the outputs will actually harm the source device, as the output should have a sufficiently high output impedance to protect itself.
