In this case, it really depends on the state of his existing refrigerator. If it's old and energy inefficient, a new one could pay for itself in electricity cost savings in a couple of years. Whether or not that would be "green" is a separate issue from the economics. And whether or not that would stop the annoying tick is a whole different matter.
