As a card-carrying subjectivist for many years may I make a few comments. Although I am on the "rational" side of the argument, as you put it, I perceive your comments as more provocative than informative. Maybe you didn't intend that - but that's how I read it. I know I had a chuckle at some comments but I didn't perceive it as directed toward Vic (something I wouldn't approve of) more as general banter. For me, my road to Damascas was some blind tests. Since then I've been on a much more objective route including (gasp) measuring things in my system and room. I have to say the SQ has improved considerably since then. Personally, the biggest barrier to progress was my supposition that what I hear is caused 100% by sonic input. Now I accept that what I hear is caused by a combination of sonic input and my mind. It is possible for me to reach quite false conclusions by listening to anything sighted. It is *probable* I will reach quite false conclusions listening to anything that isn't level matched. Such statements would have appeared unnecessarily, even bizarrely, self-doubting to me a year ago but now I accept them as the unfortunate truth. Until I accepted these fundamental facts, these first and above all, I found improving my listening experience difficult, slow, expensive and confusing.
