I'll chime in here since I just bought a SB. While it looks to be a terrific head unit, I don't think the back end of this device can compete with the power supply and analog output stages of a better DAC. Those stages are more expensive to build and just as critical as the digital front end in delivering good sound. $300 can only get you so much in those areas.
So I think a better outboard DAC is not such a bad idea if the system can present the improvements. While I'll A-B it first, I fully intend to pair mine with an Assemblage 3.1 Platinum and D2D-2 combination.
