The other day a friend said to me "Well, I'm not an audiophile like you
. . .", referring to the mini system he played his music on.

This got me thinking, because I don't think I'm an audiophile - more a
music lover who likes good quality sound. I have (a very healthy)
cynicism of the claims made by high-end equipment manufacturers, and
read Hi-Fi+ for it's amusement value. Yet I do have a good turntable, a
phono stage, DAC etc plus of course an SB3.

My friend suggested this test:

In a mythical Blade Runner-type future you have a stark choice -

1) Have a hi-fi system to die for, but only be allowed to play music on
it you currently hate.

or

2) Be restricted to a compressed and bandwith limited portable-type
player, but able to play all your favourite music.

I know which I'd go for, but what would you do . . .?

Bob
