I don't think they love the hobby so much as the status they think it confers. Nor do I think their hearing is any better than average - if anything, it's worse. What really bothers me about audiophiles is how they proselytize. It's as if their system isn't worth anything unless they can convince others how great it is. The result is a lot of misleading claims, some straight out lies, and a lot of wasted money on the part of innocent newcomers.
