I ask this because a friend in the hi-fi, home theatre and studio
equipment manufacturing and design business seemed a little skeptical
about the results of burning CDs to a hard drive on a computer and
ending up with a high fidelity result. He has the experiential and
educational background to have earned my respect.

I am posting here because, simply put, I want to reproduce what is on
my CD as EXACTINGLY (sound wise) as I can onto the hard drive and then
get it to my DAC as purely as possible.

How do you guys do it ?

I have read in other forums how USB introduces jitter and/or other
issues into the digital bitstream. USB is not involved in my case, but
I am wondering how well the interface between the CD drive of my
computer and the motherboard and then the motherboad and the Disk
handle the data flow. If FLAC is lossless and free in every way, why do
the studios my friend works with use the "meridian lossless codec" ? Is
lossless lossless? I don't want to drive myself crazy, but I do want to
all of this process right because I like good sound almost as much as I
like good music. The two together are magical.

1. Is there a best way to interface the Computer's CD and Hard disks to
the motherboard?
2. Is FLAC the best way to go ?
3. Lots of other pertinent questions that I can't think of...
