Darren, 

Like I said I want the signal as put onto the CD. Not processed in any
way. I have what you would call an integrated but it is a SE valve/tube
amp and has  only 2 stages from input to output. I have tried the
digital volume and there is definately a subtle difference. As for
slightly less noise without a pre-amp, yes I can see the argument but
it would be analogue noise which I believe is less noticible - Vinyl
still sounds better to my ears.
