I would *always* do extended listening, even if I didn't think I liked the sound initially. Example: I recently picked up a Behringer DEQ2496 and plugged it into the "effects loop" of my Transporter using fw40 to do room correction. I did a v. quick setup, i.e. white noise on both channels at the same time, to give me a idea of what it can do, and turned it on. Well, I was amazed at how much it changed the sound. I thought my system was relatively flat - maybe a little bright, but basically fairly accurate. Initially, I didn't like the sound - it sounded so different to the non-eq'd system. But I stuck with it for a few days and now there's no going back - the non-eq'd system sounds awful in comparison.
