Thanks Sean. I remember the Arcam engineer saying that the CD player was trying to power up the input stage of the integrated amp that was turned off, hence the massive distortion in the head amp.
It's clearly not ideal to put two sets up outputs onto a source and then have them not perform properly in real-world situations...especially when none of this is mentioned in the manual.
