I just hooked up 2 SB3s to my main system. One with an Elpac and one with stock. Just for the hell of it (please refer to this statement when you want to tear me apart!)
I did notice that they sounded different. Source material: Norah Jones, Steely Dan, Larry Coryell. It took me a while (like 30 mins) to see what was going on. Of course, they both sounded fine, but I wanted to see if I could identify the specific differences. My first thought was the Elpac was producing a blacker background. My second thought was that the stock sounded pretty good. I began to enjoy the stock. It seemed like there was more information present, but eventually I began to think it was bright. The problem was, it seemed to present more information. So I started to identify instruments in my A/B. There it was. The soundstage with the Elpac was wider. The soundstage with the stock was more congested. All the information was present, it was just better spread out. The stock seemed to grab my attention with more concentrated music, but once I identified the issue, I liked the Elpac better. The stock seemed louder in comparision after I figured it out. I had a similar experience A/B-ing my high powered amp and my $300 yammy receiver... They both sound good, but there were small incremental differences that I slowly identified and around which I generated preferences. But now that I know the differences, I can spot them. (yes the big ol amp won out.) So the stock is now back in the bedroom, happily powering a great sounding pair of eras and the Elpac is in the main system. BTW - I got the Elpac with a 3rd used SB3. I had no intention of getting it. I just ended up with it. I am not going to recommend anyone go get an upgraded power supply. -- roll - gybe ------------------------------------------------------------------------ roll - gybe's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8975 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=47658 _______________________________________________ audiophiles mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
