Hey Dan. Would have liked to have been there for that.

Actually the very best connection for audio IMHO is high compression
mechanical only. The only problem is that the connection degrades a
little more every day as far as audio is concerned because of the
materials involved in high-end audio (namely copper and silver). Just
can’t squeeze out all the air or get all the metal to blend no matter
how much pressure is used (within reason and without destroying the
spade). So in the end, bi-metal corrosion and oxidation start taking
their toll on the connection audio wise.

The best compromise has been to finish the high compression mechanical
connection by soldering it with high-grade silver solder. And when it
comes to soldering, Metcal is my preferred tool of choice.

But in the end isn’t all about compromise. We are compromising the fact
that we don’t have time to go see a live performance. We then try to
recreate a three dimensional living event with a compromised copy of
the event played on equipment that can never recreate the live event.
Not as bad a starting place with a studio recording, but still trying
to recreate the impossible.

So for me the idea is to get as close as I can with the money I am
willing to throw at it with an end result of a sound that is very real
and pleasing to me (and still have money left over for 6 symphony and 2
popular concerts a month).
