Of course, those who are interested in understanding the neural mechanisms themselves are free to try and explain how it works, but I've always felt that the systems are just too complex to ever be available to reductionist analysis. (But then I'm not a brain specialist, so what do I know?) As for the "Top 5 musical illusions", the two that I am in a position to easily audition seem not to be illusiory at all. The bass + guitar in "One Of These Nights" has always sounded that way: two instruments working together. And the Beatles' singing into cupped hands has never sounded like anything else to me - although I do agree that it seems they are trying to sound like some sort of brass instrument (muted trumpet rather than sax, it you ask me). Do lots of people really get deceived by these illusions?
