Hey Robin you don't know me yet so I understand your question. But I'm one of the guys who took part in writing the RFC's that define protocols used on Internet and TCP/IP ; bits run through my veins so sure I know about mac spoofing... I'm using it right now to get my Internet because the marina here has mac-filters and you need to pay for each one. Right now they think my laptop is on-line but it's actually a linksys spoofing that mac address and providing the whole boat (we live on a boat) with access ;-) Mac spoofing can be done even when you use WEP. Even if you use WPA2 it can be done (and government is doing it, be sure of that!) Without encryption everyone can sniff your wifi traffic if they want --if they want--. So, now you're afraid they are gonna copy your music-stream? You really think they are lurking out there for that?! Your web-browsing? stealing your forum password? They want that? NO! they want your banking and creditcard info and because that data is sent using https instead of http it is encrypted and they can't see it. Guys that can break that encryption can also break your wifi encryption. For most users, wifi encryption is marketing and a hoax because your unencrypted Internet traffic is not important. You would need to use shielded LCD-screens (co crt's) and shielded network cables to prevent them sniffing but wait, how does your internet-link work? DSL, cable? well, that's the easiest to sniff so you loose the game anyway. The MAC filters are just to prevent the neighbours from using your Internetlink. I don't see the inconvenience for legitimate users because they don't have to change any setting while with encryption they need to enter keys so that's more inconvenient imho... cheers, Nick. -- DeVerm ------------------------------------------------------------------------ DeVerm's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=18104 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=53018 _______________________________________________ audiophiles mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
