The only conceivable "audiophile" attribute of an HDD would be its
acoustic noise...which should be as low as possible - just like the
fan(s) in your PC.

People who think that the HDD performance can affect the sound may be
using a PC card to replay their audio... in this sense it is possible,
since the disk is just one of many components of the whole system that
can interfere (m-board, ram, HDD, PSU, sound card.

This is why we use an TCP-IP packet-based external streaming approach
with our SB's (etc)... no part of the server PC hardware can influence
or change the quality of what goes into the player! As you imply, this
is exactly why computers and networks just work - bits only get changed
by design, NOT by "accident". The data packets will either arrive in a
timely fashion with the right data inside or they will get resent until
they do!

Assuming a good rip to the storage medium of your choice, and a
well-behaved power supply for the server (and ALL the other equipment
in ones home!) that is not spewing RFI into the mains, all that's left
to worry about is what happens IN the player and everything downstream
of it (DAC etc).

The upstream server hardware/software and network is completely out of
the sound quality equation.

You want to see the signal path BEFORE it gets onto a CD/vinyl...it
ain't what you'd call minimal...SB3+Stontronics PSU - Altmann
JISCO/UPCI - TACT 2.2X (Linear PSU) + Good Vibrations S/W - MF
Triplethreat(Audiocom full mods)- Linn 5103 - Aktiv 5.1 system (6x
LK140's, ESPEK/TRIKAN/KATAN/SEIZMIK 10.5), Townsend Supertweeters,
Kimber & Chord cables
Outdoors: Boombox+Creative Sub (If I remember to turn it on...)
