Even if you can't try them at home, it's a very good idea to listen to
speakers to get an idea what you like.  I would recommend burning a CD
of music you know very well, music that it is important to you sounds
good.  Put a variety on there - some simple acoustic stuff, some
complex orchestral music with lots of dynamic range, some distorted
guitar rock, etc.  Then bring the CD to as many high-end shops as you
have patience for and listen to it on different systems.  Milan and
Turin must both be pretty close, and surely there are a good number of
audio shops there...

Amps are less important.  If I were you I'd replace the speakers and
keep your old amp, at least for now.
