Okay, I'm glad to read that, although a joke will be walking the thin line in between the two examples. I'll just ignore any further "violators". egd: but you're from down under, where talk like about fingers up nostrils is perfectly acceptable, isn't it? See, this is a joke imo and I don't think egd will be much upset with it ;-) crossing the line, I must now add some sensible stuff or else...(joke) But in Holland your post/reply wouldn't be considered a personal attack (it'll be an acceptable joke as long as it isn't addressed to the Queen), although it doesn't help the discussion much (but what's left to discuss in that thread?) I actually can add something serious here: the spell-checker reminds me continuously that English isn't my 1st language and that's so for many members. Sometimes an Australian way of saying things can be perceived as insulting by English or American readers while it is perfectly accepted in Australia, and this works the other way around too (like "fanny" is accepted in US but not so in UK... bad Yankees!). Imagine when English isn't your first language and one has to translate a way of saying something from let's say Dutch or French, to English. The result can be perceived very differently from the intention of the poster. I, being Dutch, sometimes recognize the error in translating but have made those errors myself too, like with Art not so long ago. Let me give an example: a poster called the SB a "dumb device" and got many comments about that from others, saying "black box" is what he should have written. But a direct translation of "dumb device" to Dutch is the exact technical and correct term for it, being a device that can't be configured or played without remote control/feed etc. It's has no negative meaning in Dutch and I would translate it to... "slim device" instead of "dumb device". Funny thing is that the word "slim" exists in Dutch too and means "smart", no wonder the Dutch get confused ;-) All this is really just a reminder for all the English speakers that when you read something "funny-sounding" it's probably just because of language-trouble without any negative intention. Most English speakers would do way worse trying to post in Dutch, French, German or even Spanish so give us "foreigners" a break ;-) cheers, Nick. -- DeVerm ------------------------------------------------------------------------ DeVerm's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=18104 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=54622 _______________________________________________ audiophiles mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
