Also, a key selling point of any DAC is the total system cost - that's the DAC chip itself plus the handful of other components required. The manufacturer's reference design is usually not even intended to deliver the maximum possible performance that the part is capable of, but rather to hit a certain sweet spot where they can demonstrate a good competitive advantage. That's why it's usually possible to make it perform better than the spec, if you choose to.
