Radio signals which are playing pop type music are almost always compressed, the quiet stuff is louder and the loud stuff quieter and then the gain is turned up. This makes the dynamic range much less, there are no quiet moments in the music. In the UK the most obvious example of this is radio 3 and radio 1 on the internet. Radio 1 sounds very exciting and immediate and in order to listen to it I would have to turn the volume down. If I then tune to a concert on Radio 3 there have been occasions when there has been no music audible until I turn the volume up to the correct level....
