My understanding is that a good buffer (like the Burson) reduced the
potentially degrading effects of interconnect cables on the transmitted
autio signal, and additionally presents a stronger and less distorted
signal to the input stage of the following component.

Having the buffer as a separate stand-alone component with its own
high-quality power supply, also isolates it from the power supplies of
the other equipment, which can bring further benefits.

Also like Dave said, a buffer will overcome any existing impedance
mismatch problems between line-level connected equipment - making such
equipment compatible and greatly improving the resulting sonics. The
Burson for instance, has an input impedance of 550K ohms, and an output
impedance of under 30 ohms.

The Burson in particular, also gives an extremely clean 6db gain-boost
to the incoming audio signal, which in some situations is a nice extra
benefit as well.
