I've tried the experiment I outlined above. Firmware does change according to the version of Squeezecenter used, which is good (ie 7.2.1 has firmware 113, and 7.3 has firmware 120). There is a prompt to upload the relevant update when you shift between sources, and a short wait while the update installs itself. I set the audio settings in Squeezecenter to the same values on both machines. Volume output is fixed, and preamp volume on 63. The player digital out is connected via cable to a Beresford DAC, which in turn feeds (using the fixed output connections) my amplifier. And after shifting between sources for about an hour and a half my findings reinforce the comments I made near the start of the thread. All I can say further is to try the experiment - if you can't hear a difference then fine, use 7.3 - if you can hear a negative difference then stick with 7.2.1 . Oh, and don't bother posting your findings - apparently the whole idea is hare brained.
