I will agree with you that you wouldn't get a whole lot of bang for the buck with a home theater receiver.
Tweaks and upgrades are always the last resort, and are dubious of improving anything. Mostly they just make the sound "more different". The thing that would probably make the most difference is to switch from using monitors on stands to using full size floor standers.
