I've only seen two types of TOSLINK connectors:

- "proper" ones with a D-shaped connector.

door out of the way and press in pretty tight, not quite "clicking" in
place but almost.  If not, you have a defective receptacle.

- "cheap" ones that are circular.  The connector is made from a
slightly gummy, rubbery material.  The deformation and stickiness of
this material and the fact that the circle is large enough to wedge
into the D-shaped connector hold it in place.  It doesn't feel as
secure as the D-connector but it seems to work fine.

If either type falls out then you probably have a defective receptacle.
This seems quite common - it looks like the protective "door" is the
weak part of the receptacle.  It will sometimes fall off or jam.  My
A/V receiver had a door off right in the store.  It looks like the door
forms part of the mechanism that holds the connector in place - without
it, the connector won't stay in.
