Yes, your guess was right, and i agree with that remark on a peculiarity. NAIM for whatever reason decided to have ground only in it's cd player. Maybe it's a rare approach to prevent hums in combination of devices, maybe some new trick of how to make people purchase more. For sure here's a nice source of problems for people who don't know or forget about this. So maybe you are right, and the hum sound was caused by the amp lacking ground, while the Squeezebox pretended to be the culprit by showing quite high potential.
