I think what is very instructive is the parallel experience in video.
The industry has gone from standard def to HD which is being adopted
fairly quickly now. There are no arguments from the videophile or
man-on-the-street about whether there's a perceivable difference in
quality between SD and HD.

By contrast there are lots of arguments over red book versus hi-rez in
audio which tells you all you need to know.

I don't see a great deal of evidence that hi-rez is making major
in-roads. If you're a classical fan, or the sort who chooses their music
by rez, then, yes, maybe it appears there are more and more hi-rez
releases. When I choose music the available format is the very last
thing I consider - and normally the music I like ends up being on red
book only. And red book is massive overkill for the woeful production
values of the music I like!

When given the option, I am more interested in pursuing better original
recordings e.g. MoFi rather than being fixated on a higher-rez delivery
format.
