I can hear noise when my ear is near the drivers but from the listening
position I can't, at least when the attenuators (see other threads) are
installed.

Having said that I can hear more noise when my preamp is enabled, too!
All active components introduce noise, it's just a matter of how much.

I would say listening at 30db above the usual volume is far from
"trying to prove something". Quite the contrary, he's gone out of his
way to uncover differences even when not first apparent, showing he has
arrived at his conclusion with care.
