Hard (probably so in the vast > majority of cases), but not *always* so. Agreed. Some people round here will know that I'm a bit of an evangelist for the "ditch the preamp" message. But my rationale has always been that it's because most preamps do have an audible "signature". The SCA2 is one of the few exceptions.
